THE PELICAN BRIEF

RISING PELICAN DEATHS

November 2011

It appears that history may be repeating itself when the volunteers of Possumwood Acres learned that several pelicans were found to have terribly shattered wings on Onslow Beach. The pelicans were brought to Possumwood Acres for euthanizing.

Injured birds need to be captured and brought to Possumwood Acres as quickly as possible. If you are able to transport these precious birds, please see the next section below for specific instructions. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

We are again asking concerned citizens to keep an eye out on boats out at sea. We ask that beach walkers bring along a pair of binoculars to observe any signs of pelican abuse that may be occuring.  Any signs of injury need to be reported, and dead shorebirds need to be reported. Your reports and tips can be anonymous.

TRANSPORT INSTRUCTIONS

Possumwood Acres is seeking transporters from the beach who are willing to help. This includes transporting birds from one location to another and/or meeting our Transport Coordinator, Roz Porter. Transporters from the Jacksonville area who have clearance through Base are urged to help by completing the transport trip to Possumwood Acres in Hubert.

Qualified volunteers at PAWS can teach you how to pick up injured birds by using a pair of gloves and an old towel. A simple large cardboard box will be suitable as a transport container to bring the injured bird to PAWS.

Fall and Winter are the heaviest times in transporting these poor birds. They need immediate help, and cannot sit on the beach for hours or days until a transporter can be found. Many are the emaciated juveniles not finding enough food during the cold spells, and they end up becoming very weak to the point where they starve to death.

Please consider donating your time to help your wildlife by also taking a study.

Please call the office at 910.326.6432 for more information. Thank you for your support.

Wounded by unknown attackers off shore of our local beaches, these pelicans
suffered shattered wings. Sadly, they had to be euthanized.
