***PUBLIC ALERT***
April 27, 2013
Recently, two Screech Owls were stolen from Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary, a federal offense. A week later, the owls were found alive, but severely malnourished, frightened, and dumped in another county.

May 4, 2013
In the wake of the theft of our
two little owls, many of you have generously contributed donations to our "new and improved" security system. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my
heart for contributing. There
will be formal thank you letters sent out to everyone very shortly, and
I apologize for the delay. We have already installed hinges and heavy
locks on all the raptor cages and on a few more. Now we are trying to
research a camera security system to have installed on the grounds. We
have been in contact with the Sheriff's Department and the Police
Department of Jacksonville, and they have been extremely courteous and
are investigating this terrible incident. Everyone hopes the culprits
are caught quickly, and Possumwood Acres does plan on pressing
charges....
after all, this is a federal crime (since the owls are federally
protected) and a larceny.
We will keep you informed about any progress that is made with this, and we thank you for caring about Rusty and Hotshot as much as we do.
Toni O'Neil, Director

Welcome to Possumwood Acres
Wildlife Sanctuary!
Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary (PAWS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit center that exists solely on donations and grants, and the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our goal is to treat and release each animal and return them back to the wild. Many animals come to us due to conflicts with humans, such as being hit by cars, attacked by cats and dogs, or being taken away from their parents by well meaning but unknowing humans. We hold current state and federal licenses for wildlife rehabilitation, possession, and education. Watch a short video of what we are all about!
PAWS is a Wildlife Sanctuary specializing in rehabilitation care and treatment of small mammals, songbirds, waterfowl, raptors, shorebirds, and reptiles. We provide:
-
Orphan care for babies and eventual release back into the wild.
-
Educational programs and presentations to schools, youth and civic groups, and libraries, relating to native local wildlife, ecology, environment, natural resources, and backyard habitat creation.
-
A learning center to provide experience in hands-on rehabilitation skills to new rehabilitators, or those interested in earning their mandatory hours of experience and training for a variety of permits and license.
-
A permanent home to non-releasable waterfowl and assistance with placement of adoptable domestic waterfowl.
